The Mesozoic Era: When Dinosaurs Lived

By DinoFlex Editorial Team
Geologic timeMesozoic eraDinosaur basics

Dinosaurs lived during the Mesozoic Era, which is split into three periods: Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous.

Fast facts

  • Mesozoic means 'middle life'
  • Sauropods grew their biggest in the Jurassic
  • T. rex only lived in the last 2 million years of the Cretaceous
  • The end-Cretaceous extinction wiped out about 75% of species

Triassic (252-201 million years ago)

The first dinosaurs appeared, small and fast. Most other animals were still recovering from a huge extinction at the end of the Permian.

Jurassic (201-145 million years ago)

Long-necked sauropods like Brachiosaurus dominated. Predators like Allosaurus and Stegosaurus also lived during this time.

Cretaceous (145-66 million years ago)

Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Velociraptor lived in this period. An asteroid impact ended the Cretaceous and the age of non-avian dinosaurs.
