Feathered Dinosaurs

By DinoFlex Editorial Team
Dinosaur biologyTheropodsBirds and dinosaurs

For most of the 20th century, dinosaurs were drawn as scaly lizards. New discoveries from China and elsewhere have shown that many - maybe most - theropod dinosaurs had feathers.

Fast facts

  • Velociraptor was feathered
  • Feathers came before flight
  • Microraptor had four wings
  • Birds inherited their feathers from theropod dinosaurs

How do we know?

Fossilized impressions of feathers, quill knobs on bone, and even preserved color pigments (called melanosomes) have been found in many theropod fossils.

Did T. rex have feathers?

Probably some - younger T. rex likely had downy fuzz, and adults may have kept patches. Scientists still debate exactly how much.
